De Waal is situated in the picturesque Stellenbosch Kloof Valley, just outside Stellenbosch on the way to Kuilsrivier. With a long and rich history, the Uiterwyk Estate dates back to 1682, the brand name has since been changed to De Waal. The wines are elegant and classical in style, the farm is well-known for the indigenous South-African variety, Pinotage. DeWaal, with a 9 generations tradition in wine-making, is one of only seven producers who have won the prestigious ABSA top 10 Pinotage award 6 times or more.
When arriving at De Waal, one is also able to taste the 2 ranges, Young Vines, made from the younger vineyards with higher yields and the premium reserve range. There are 3 different styles of Pinotages to taste – something that excites Pinotage lovers and is quite seldomly found in the industry. The Top of the Hill Pinotage from De Waal is made from the oldest Pinotage vines in the world – an unbelievable 65 years old! These vines produce rich concentrated fruit which is then finished off in the cellar with 100% new French oak to create a wonderful rich, structured wine.
The lovely outside Terrace (next to the Tasting Venue) offers views of these special old vineyards, where one is able to enjoy light cheese luncheons with the fantastic red wines, pre-bookings are necessary.
Tastings are R30,00 per person including 5 wines, crackers and bottled water.
Delectable cheese platters are on offer at R195,00 for 2 people, including a selection of local cheeses, condiments and a South African treat. As well as a glass of wine of their choice of the Young Vines range
